It depends. Baby laundry detergents are made specifically for babies, meaning that the detergent formulas are typically scent-free, dye-free and have less skin-irritating chemicals that can be absorbed into the babies’ skin. While some babies may not experience skin irritation from regular laundry detergent, many parents opt for something they 100% know and trust has fewer harsh chemicals and will be more gentle on babies’ sensitive skin - like Honest! If you do choose to wash your baby’s clothes in regular detergent, typically liquid detergents are more preferable over powder detergent for your washing machine.
Pre-washing baby clothes can remove any lingering dust or chemicals. We recommend putting the clothes through the washing machine with a gentle soap before they come into contact with your baby’s skin.
When shopping for baby-safe detergent, look for a product that is free of dyes or fragrances. A good rule of thumb to follow is to buy a product that is labeled as a hypoallergenic detergent. These products are known to be gentle and are less likely to cause skin irritation.
While some babies may not react to traditional laundry detergent, it’s still recommended to use a hypoallergenic product to prevent any irritation or an allergic reaction. A baby’s skin is sensitive, which means they may react differently to chemicals and cleaners.
Most health professionals recommend using baby detergent for at least the first 6 months. However, most parents choose to use hypoallergenic detergent for the first year since most babies have very sensitive skin and may react to harsh detergents. Also, most professionals will recommend sticking to a liquid form instead of a powdered detergent. If you are unsure which soap or detergent products to use on your baby, consider consulting your doctor.
When washing baby clothes, it's okay to throw them into the dryer after they have gone through their wash cycle. However, if they are made of delicate fabric, it's highly recommended to hang dry the pieces to prevent damage.
