Nearly 47,000 people are experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County on any given night, many of whom are women and children. To bring these individuals and families a special holiday season, Honest partnered with Baby2Baby, Union Rescue Mission, and the LAUSD Homeless Education Program for our annual year-end give back event. Our team collected nearly 2500 food items to be distributed during the holidays, packed over 100 Thanksgiving meals for families and wrapped over 150 gifts for elementary students. There’s no better way to wrap up the year than with gratitude and giving, and we’re looking forward to an exciting New Year!
This year, we saw hurricanes on the East Coast, fires in California, along with other natural disasters affecting our communities. As a mission-driven company with values rooted in empowerment, we’ll always be here for each other and our community during these times of need, and continued to partner with Baby2Baby to provide basic essentials to those who were displaced by these events. Baby2Baby works tirelessly with a network of organizations across the US to get essential items such as diapers, wipes and hygiene products into the hands of those who need them. You can get involved, or learn more about their work, at baby2baby.org.
In celebration of Giving Tuesday, our team took a break from our phones, computers and the office to step out into our community and give back to those in need. We partnered with 5 inspirational organizations for a Day of Purpose to support underserved families, organize donated food and hygiene products and take care of our local habitat. We’re hugely thankful to Baby2Baby, PATH, St. Joseph Center, LA Food Bank and Friends of Ballona Wetlands for the amazing work they do every day. Together, we spent nearly 300 hours of service in our local Los Angeles community, contributing to over 1,500 hours volunteered together in 2018!
2018 marks Honest’s 5th year participating in the Nautica Malibu Triathlon! Our dedicated team raised just over $7,000 in donations, contributing to the $1.4 million total in our division for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. All funds raised support pediatric cancer research at the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases
One of Baby2Baby’s biggest initiatives of the year is helping low-income children prepare for the new school year. While we talk a lot about diapers and wipes, one of the highest needs for school-aged children is backpacks. For many of the low-income children Baby2Baby works with, it not only holds their school supplies, but also all of their personal belongings. That’s why our team joined together to pack 100 backpacks and hosted a school supplies drive, which brought in over 5,000 brand new supplies for low-income kids returning to school in August.
From the start, Honest has partnered with Baby2Baby to help provide diapers, clothing and basic necessities to low-income children across the US. We believe that providing these essentials in a time of need means empowering more families to live happy, healthy lives. That’s why we donated 1.5 million diapers to Baby2Baby for mothers and babies in need across the country in celebration of Mother’s Day!
Each year, Garden School Foundation puts on their community-wide event Fiesta De La Huerta, which brings together families from the different schools they serve for a day of activities in the garden! This year, the annual event celebrated Earth Day with a garden scavenger hunt, compost petting zoo, and a station to upcycle recycled bottles into planters. We had a blast crafting with the students and sharing tips to protect our earth.
Here at Honest, we are big believers in being of service to our community and driving meaningful social impact. That’s why we partnered with Girls Build LA, a program challenging middle and high school students to identify an issue they face and make a positive change. We invited students over for a field trip to Honest HQ, where they presented on their solution to expanding access to feminine care in their community. The day was spent filled with inspiring conversations around health, wellness and empowering women both at work and at school.
One of the ways we drive the change we want to see in the world is by partnering with Mount Sinai Health Systems in New York and supporting their advances in science and research. We’re excited to share that Honest has expanded our partnership with Mount Sinai by endowing the inaugural Children’s Environmental Health Innovation Grant. Over the course of 2018, Honest’grant will fund two postdoctoral fellows whose research focuses on how early exposure to environmental factors may influence health outcomes throughout life.
One of the most inspiring organizations our team has volunteered with is A Sense of Home, a nonprofit in Los Angeles helping youth who are aging out of the foster care system transition into their own home. To celebrate Valentine’s Day, A Sense of Home challenged teams to help create 12 new homes for 12 young moms and their children who recently left foster care. Our Honest team built furniture, decorated and spent the day celebrating community and empowerment. We hope Kennesha and her son Kydir enjoy the space as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life!
