Pinks, neutrals, and reds: How do you find the right lip color?

You don’t have to be a professional makeup artist to know that it’s important to find the right lip color for your skin tone. But you might not know how to do it. Thankfully, it’s easier than you might think. You just need to have a little information about skin tones and undertones to find the perfect shade.

On a basic level, there are three skin tones: light, medium, and dark. It doesn’t stop there though (that would make it too easy). Your skin also has an undertone, which can be cool, warm, or neutral. 

You have cool undertones if you have a pink, red or bluish tint to your skin. Other signs that you have cool undertones include being more prone to sunburn, looking good in silver jewelry, and having veins that appear blue. If you have cool undertones to your skin, you should opt for pink, red, and neutral lipsticks with blue or purple hues. 

Having warm undertones means that you have a yellow, golden, or olive hue to your skin. You also tend to tan easily, look amazing in gold jewelry, and have veins that appear greenish. As for lip color, you’ll want to opt for brick reds, terracotta browns, and bold oranges. Basically, anything with red or orange hues.

It’s also possible to have a mix of pink and yellow in your skin, also known as having neutral undertones. With this mix of warm and cool undertones, the world is your oyster when it comes to lip color. You can wear a wide spectrum of colors. But keep in mind that pinks tend to look best on fair skin, mauve shades are great on medium skin and berries are beautiful on dark skin.
