Exciting News from Sacramento!

Here at Honest, transparency is a guiding principle in everything we do. From day one, we made the decision to list the ingredients on all of our products because we believe it’s the right thing to do. We believe our consumers have a right to know what is inside the products they're using every day, and that transparency is critical to empowering people to make informed decisions about what they are purchasing. So we've been listing the ingredients on the labels of of our products – including our household cleaning line – since we launched five years ago.

But the fact is, there is currently NO law requiring companies to disclose ingredients in cleaning products. We take for granted the fact that ingredient labeling is required on packaged food – of course we have a right to know what we’re eating!  And similar labeling is required for personal care products – we need to know what we're putting on our (and our kids') skin. So we think it goes without saying that we should have the same right to know what's in the cleaning products we're using in our homes. It just makes sense.

A few months ago, I went to Sacramento to meet with California legislators about this very issue. And today, I'm thrilled to announce that today Senator Ricardo Lara introduced the Cleaning Product Right to Know Act of 2017 (SB 258), which would require clear labeling of ingredients on all cleaning products sold in California.  As Senator Lara said today, “We trust Californians to check the labels on food, drugs and cosmetics, but you have to be a chemist to know what is in the cleaning products that are under your kitchen sink. The Cleaning Product Right to Know Act will require companies to come clean about their ingredients so California consumers and domestic workers have the right to know what they are buying and using and can make informed choices.”

We applaud Senator Lara for his leadership on this important "right to know" issue. At Honest, we've recognized and responded to the consumer mandate for visibility into the ingredients that are in the products we all use every day. And we strongly support efforts here in California that will drive the cleaning product industry as a whole to embrace greater transparency. Not only do consumers have a right to know, but we believe labeling requirements will ultimately spur innovation, promote business growth, expand cleaner, greener chemistry, and set the tone for even better consumer protection.

In addition to our support, the Cleaning Product Right to Know Act is supported by domestic workers, work safety groups, women’s health advocates, environmental and environmental justice groups, public health groups. In the months ahead, we will continue to update you on how Honest is working with these groups to pave the way for passage of this landmark legislation. In the meantime, we encourage you to thank Senator Lara by contacting him here or @senricardolara and #SB258 on Twitter. If you live in California, please contact your state legislators to express your support for the CA Cleaning Product Right to Know Act (SB258) – find out how here!
