Honest to Goodness: Our Top 12 Social Goodness Efforts of 2016

Here at Honest, giving back is in our DNA. We believe that it’s our responsibility to do our part to help create a healthy and sustainable future for all, and this goes well beyond our commitment to providing safe products. With another year (and birthday!) in the books, we’re taking a look back at some of our most memorable Social Goodness efforts of 2016 and recapping how we worked together to make a difference.

But first, some highlights. We’re thrilled to share that in 2016, Honest donated…

  • 4,658,048 diapers
  • 526,720 home and personal care, vitamins, gear and more
  • $150,000 worth of community grants
  • 4,306 employee hours to volunteering

  1. Sponsored the healthy renovations of a child care center. Through our Honest Makeover campaign, we granted $50,000 worth of renovations to a nominated child care center in support of creating healthy environments for early childhood care and development.
  2. Celebrated our largest diaper donations to date. In support of the White House #DiaperGap campaign, we got social to give back. With your help, we donated 1.2 million diapers in the Spring plus another 1.2 million diapers in honor of our Love Today diaper to nonprofit partners like Baby2Baby and the National Diaper Bank Network that  support low-income families.
  3. Surprised our friends at Garden School Foundation with a $50,000 donation. The funds were enough to resume their Seed to Table program, which promotes interdisciplinary education through garden-based learning in outdoor living classrooms and is designed to get kids learning about the world through firsthand experiences.
  4. Joined Heal the Bay to help clean up our local beaches. Honest employees and their families hit the sand and cleared the beach of over 154.5 pounds of trash and 1,206 cigarette butts! We also pledged a $7,500 sponsorship to help Heal the Bay continue to protect our local ecosystems and advocate for a cleaner Los Angeles.
  5. Partnered with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Welcome Home Project. The program helps formerly homeless individuals and families move into permanent housing throughout the city. Honest employees assembled and donated welcome home baskets filled with essential products to help make the transition a smooth and safe one.
  6. Continued to advocate for stronger chemical regulations. Founders Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan first visited Washington, DC in 2011 — before Honest even launched — to urge Congress to strengthen our nation’s chemical safety laws. In 2016,  we saw some major strides made to help protect consumers from harsh, unregulated chemicals in our everyday products, and we will continue to advocate for stricter federal and state safety and transparency standards.
  7. Supported American Red Cross relief efforts. Following catastrophic flooding in Louisiana, we partnered with the Red Cross to provide 15,095 units of Honest products most needed by those affected. We are committed to impacting families everywhere, not just in our local community, and are proud to have been able to support the Red Cross in their efforts.
  8. Collaborated with the Confetti Foundation to help children celebrate their birthdays. In partnership with the Confetti Foundation, Honest employees assembled personal birthday boxes for children spending their birthdays in the hospital. Each family also received a gift bag of Honest goodies, and we are continuing to provide items for every birthday box that the Confetti Foundation sends for one full year.
  9. Supported environmental health research. We know firsthand that our consumers aren’t just looking for safer products – you want us to engage with you and share science-based evidence that allows you to make safer purchasing decisions for your families. We are proud that we’ve grown to a point where we can invest directly into the science and research that is so critical to our mission. In addition to sponsoring a research lab at the Children’s Environmental Health Center at Mt. Sinai for the past two years, we also opened our own in-house product R&D lab with experts in cosmetic chemistry, neurobiology, and toxicology. And in November, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the National Institute of Health and Environmental Sciences (NIEHS), the nation's largest federal sponsor of scientific research that gives us the evidence we need to protect ourselves (and our children) from environmental threats to human health.
  10. Participated in the Made to Matter Week of Service. In support of our relationship with Target, we partnered with our fellow Made to Matter brands to demonstrate our shared commitment to giving back to our local communities. We teamed up with City Year to roll up our sleeves and transform a local elementary school. Honest volunteers helped with various beautification projects, ranging from painting educational murals to create engaging blacktop games, activities, and more!
  11. Partnered with MaxLove Project for the third consecutive year. In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we proudly partnered with MaxLove Project to help raise funds and awareness. Through our social campaign, we reached our fundraising goal of $50,000, which will go towards helping childhood cancer families thrive against life-threatening conditions.
  12. Pledged our commitment to closing the gender pay gap. We signed the White House Equal Pay Pledge to reinforce our commitment to closing the gender pay gap. We know that policies that ensure fair pay not only help companies like ours attract amazing talent and boost our productivity, but they are also a way for us to play a critical role in reducing the national gender pay gap and stand up for equality.
